The Center for Informal Learning and SchoolsLink: http://www.exploratorium.org/cils/mission.html The Center for Informal Learning and Schools (CILS) supports research and scholarship in the improvement of K-12 science education through the study of informal science learning and institutions, and their relationships to schools. Informal science institutions are content-rich resources found in most urban areas throughout the U.S. They use learner-centered designs, inquiry-based teaching approaches, scientific discourse and argumentation, and multiple representations of phenomena to create compelling learning opportunities for students and teachers. How can informal science education institutions and school systems form better alliances? What can informal designs and strategies tell us about teaching and learning in the K-12 classroom? How can they be most effectively used by local school systems? And, conversely, how can principles of effective classroom learning be used by informal science education institutions? CILS addresses these questions through the development of new education leaders, practices, and knowledge.
