The TransistorLink: http://www.lucent.com/minds/transistor/ Target Audience Grades - 6-8 9-12 Lucent Technologies is the offspring of Bell Labs where the transistor was invented fifty years ago. This site provides pages containing information on the history of the transistor, uses of the transistor, the inventors, current information about these devices, what is a transistor, and an FAQ file. The page titled “how does it work” contains a very clear and helpful animation showing how the transistor does its job of switching and amplification. The history pages describe the boundaries of physics during the 1930’s and speaks about the failed experiments, which might have discovered the mechanism of the transistor almost a decade earlier than 1947. Most of the pages are downloadable in PDF files The site is divided into six sections, which you get to explore including: * Transistor * Uses * What Is It? * Brinkman * Inventors * FAQ The transistor legacy: then and now. Bell Labs is the birthplace of the transistor, inventing the device that led to a communications revolution. This web presentation, celebrating more than 50 years of the transistor, is also available in PDF format. Download the PDF now (446 KB).
